On 28 July 2026, AGC Biologics said an undisclosed international biopharmaceutical company has secured half of the mammalian manufacturing capacity of its Yokohama site in Japan, before the site has opened. The multi-year commercial contract is expected to reach "hundreds of millions of dollars" in total value. The release gives no exact figure and does not name the customer or the molecules.
What the contract covers
- Five biopharmaceutical products, with a minimum of 35 batches per year.

The hardware
Once operational in 2027, the site will run four 2,000 L Cytiva single-use bioreactors and two 5,000 L Thermo Fisher Scientific DynaDrive single-use bioreactors, adding 18,000 L to AGC Biologics' existing single-use capacity. Mammalian manufacturing will have two downstream lines. The company says construction will be completed in December 2026, when selected customers and guests are scheduled to visit.
Yokohama will also offer cell therapy services in six clean rooms, and mRNA development and manufacturing with two IVT, two purification and two LNP lines. The site sits next to the AGC Yokohama Technical Center and, according to the release, was part of the biomanufacturing investments made by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) in 2022.
AGC Biologics frames the deal as demand for geopolitically stable supply chains, with Japan as an allied hub. That is the company's reading; the release gives no data on it.
What it means for a plant
Four PPQ campaigns in two years, on a site that only becomes operational in 2027, puts tech transfer, equipment qualification and process validation on a tight shared timeline. With 2,000 L and 5,000 L trains under one roof, the release leaves open at which scale each of the five products will run, and therefore whether transfer to Yokohama also involves a change of scale. For sponsors looking for mammalian capacity in Japan, the useful fact is simple: half of this greenfield site's mammalian capacity was committed before start-up. The release says nothing about the other half.
